Mahama reacts to Asiedu Nketia’s coup comments

Former President John Dramani Mahama has made a heartfelt appeal to the citizens of Ghana, urging them to uphold the rule of law and reject any inclination towards supporting a potential coup d’état in the country.

This plea comes in the wake of comments by Johnson Asiedu Nketia, the National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), suggesting that Ghana might be ripe for a coup d’état. Nketia stated that although the time seems overdue for a change in leadership and a return to autocratic governance, Ghana’s resilience against chaos is due to the remarkable tolerance of its people.

However, Mr. Mahama, speaking at the 3rd National Conference of Imams and Regional Imams of Ghana in Kumasi, emphatically emphasized that, despite the nation’s current economic challenges, contemplating a coup should never even be considered as a last resort.

Mr. Mahama took the opportunity to criticize the handling of the country’s affairs by the Akufo-Addo-led administration. He expressed his concerns, saying, “We warned the NPP about the dangerous path they were taking, but our advice fell on deaf ears. This is the reason why we find ourselves in the situation we are in today, facing numerous challenges. However, we must all work together to navigate these challenges. It is crucial that we adhere to constitutional governance and avoid being swayed by the idea of resorting to coups.”

He further stressed that, despite the hardships faced, the democratic process allows for change through elections. With only a year left before the opportunity to elect new leaders arises, Mr. Mahama encouraged the people to continue respecting the Constitution and to dismiss any thoughts of coups, emphasizing that adherence to constitutional governance is the key to resolving the nation’s issues.
